We have found that antique Chinese furniture as well as Persian carpets are incredibly affordable here in Singapore...at least compared to what they would cost in the US. We recently purchased the wardrobe shown above for a fraction of the cost of our furniture in the US. This particular piece is approximately 80-100 years old from a central province of China. It was an extremely good deal and we fell in love with the intricate wood carvings in the doors.
This weekend, over the Chinese New Year holiday, we are planning to participate in a carpet auction! I attended one last weekend just to understand the process and determine whether it was worth trying. As the bidding process started to heat up, I had a hard time keeping my card in my lap! These carpets can take anywhere from 8 months to 7 years to complete! Since much of the younger generation have not picked up the craft of their parents before them, most of the Persian rugs in the market today are actually quite old an; not new like you might think. This weekend should be fun!
