As many of you know, caring for a newborn brings with it a certain amount of sleep deprivation. Gone are the days of an uninterrupted eight hours of sleep and in their place come a routine of on again, off again periods of rest. While Jess and I consider ourselves extremely lucky with how well Kaelan has slept through the night from practically day one, I believe the events of last night demonstrate that perhaps we’re not getting quite as much sleep as we thought.
This particular episode begins around 2:30am on Wednesday morning when I am woken by Jessica fumbling around in the bed. At this point, I’m lying on my side with my back to her so I could not see what she was doing nor did I much care. Like most nights, I assumed she was up for either a night feeding or perhaps to change a messy diaper. I started to drift back to sleep but Jessica continued to pester me by rubbing my legs and pulling at the covers. As things seemed to be lasting longer than usual, I decided to roll over and see what exactly was taking place on her side of the bed. In my fog of sleep, I rolled over to discover Jessica sitting in the middle of the bed, legs crossed, and tugging at the bed covers along with my leg. Confused, I looked past her to the bassinet positioned beside the bed and found Kaelan fast asleep. Huh? If Kaelan was sleeping and in no need of attention, what was Jessica doing? Exactly what compelled her to get up and sit with her legs crossed in the middle of our bed and begin messing around with the covers, and perhaps more importantly, wake me up?! I had to know so I asked the obvious question, “Jessica, what are you doing?” Jessica stopped her frantic movements, turned to look at me and state quite matter of factly, “I’m looking for Kaelan and the rest of the babies at the zoo!” Not sure I was taking everything in correctly, I responded with the obvious question…”huh?” And as if no other explanation was needed, Jessica stopped her “search” for Kaelan and the babies at the zoo and curled back under the covers and immediately fell fast asleep.
So there I am, sitting up in bed wondering what in the heck just happened! Did we seriously just have that conversation? I glanced again at Jessica to find her hard asleep as if nothing had happened. At that point, I actually laughed out loud realizing that Jessica was dreaming and playing out the events of that dream in the middle of our bed. I can't help but chuckle now as I replay the event in my mind. It appears a little sleep deprivation can lead to some funny behavior as Jessica demonstrated last night. I just hope that she doesn’t later expand her “search” for Kaelan and the other babies beyond the middle of our bed!
